           Hehadnomoney,therefore,andsoheturnedawaytoseekhospitalityelsewhere.LookingthroughanopenwindowintooneoftheroomsoftheInn,ashepassedalong,hesawanoldmancountingonatableabigheapofgoldpieces,whichKikithoughttobemoney.Oneofthesewouldbuyhimsupperandabed,hereflected,sohetransformedhimselfintoamagpieand,flyingthroughtheopenwindow,caughtuponeofthegoldpiecesinhisbeakandflewoutagainbeforetheoldmancouldinterfere.Indeed,theoldmanwhowasrobbedwasquitehelpless,forhedarednotleavehispileofgoldtochasethemagpie,andbeforehecouldplacethegoldinasackinhispockettherobberbirdwasoutofsightandtoseekitwouldbefolly.

           KikiAruflewtoagroupoftreesand,droppingthegoldpiecetotheground,resumedhispropershape,andthenpickedupthemoneyandputitinhispocket.

           "You’llbesorryforthis!"exclaimedasmallvoicejustoverhishead.

           Kikilookedupandsawthatasparrow,percheduponabranch,waswatchinghim.

           "Sorryforwhat?"hedemanded.

           "Oh,Isawthewholething,"assertedthesparrow."Isawyoulookinthewindowatthegold,andthenmakeyourselfintoamagpieandrobthepoorman,andthenIsawyouflyhereandmakethebirdintoyourformershape.That’smagic,andmagiciswickedandunlawful;andyoustolemoney,andthat’sastillgreatercrime.You’llbesorry,someday."

           "Idon’tcare,"repliedKikiAru,scowling.

           "Aren’tyouafraidtobewicked?"askedthesparrow.
