DilltookapieceofpaperfromhispocketandgaveittoJem.Thethreeofuswalkedcautiouslytowardtheoldhouse.Dillremainedatthelight-poleonthefrontcornerofthelot,andJemandIedgeddownthesidewalkparalleltothesideofthehouse.IwalkedbeyondJemandstoodwhereIcouldseearoundthecurve.
"Allclear,"Isaid."Notasoulinsight."
JemlookedupthesidewalktoDill,whonodded.
Jemattachedthenotetotheendofthefishingpole,letthepoleoutacrosstheyardandpushedittowardthewindowhehadselected.Thepolelackedseveralinchesofbeinglongenough,andJemleanedoverasfarashecould.Iwatchedhimmakingjabbingmotionsforsolong,Iabandonedmypostandwenttohim.
"Can’tgetitoffthepole,"hemuttered,"orifIgotitoffIcan’tmakeitstay.G’onbackdownthestreet,Scout."
Ireturnedandgazedaroundthecurveattheemptyroad.OccasionallyIlookedbackatJem,whowaspatientlytryingtoplacethenoteonthewindowsill.
