Becauseitsprimaryreasonforexistencewasgovernment,MaycombwassparedthegrubbinessthatdistinguishedmostAlabamatownsitssize.Inthebeginningitsbuildingsweresolid,itscourthouseproud,itsstreetsgraciouslywide.Maycomb’sproportionofprofessionalpeopleranhigh:onewenttheretohavehisteethpulled,hiswagonfixed,hisheartlistenedto,hismoneydeposited,hissoulsaved,hismulesvetted.ButtheultimatewisdomofSinkfield’smaneuverisopentoquestion.
