           Yet,althoughthusconsolinghimselfwithillusorysuppositions,Boxtelwasnotabletoresisttheburningcuriositywhichwasdevouringhim.Intheevening,therefore,heplacedaladderagainstthepartitionwallbetweentheirgardens,and,lookingintothatofhisneighbourVanBaerle,heconvincedhimselfthatthesoilofalargesquarebed,whichhadformerlybeenoccupiedbydifferentplants,wasremoved,andthegrounddisposedinbedsofloammixedwithrivermud(acombinationwhichisparticularlyfavourabletothetulip),andthewholesurroundedbyaborderofturftokeepthesoilinitsplace.Besidesthis,sufficientshadetotemperthenoondayheat;aspectsouth-southwest;waterinabundantsupply,andathand;inshort,everyrequirementtoinsurenotonlysuccessbutalsoprogress.TherecouldnotbeadoubtthatVanBaerlehadbecomeatulip-grower.

           Boxtelatoncepicturedtohimselfthislearnedman,withacapitaloffourhundredthousandandayearlyincomeoftenthousandguilders,devotingallhisintellectualandfinancialresourcestothecultivationofthetulip.Heforesawhisneighbour’ssuccess,andhefeltsuchapangatthemereideaofthissuccessthathishandsdroppedpowerless,hiskneestrembled,andhefellindespairfromtheladder
