Gryphus,nothavingreceivedanytidingsofRosaorofJacob,persuadedhimselfthatallthathadhappenedwasthedevil’swork,andthatDr.CorneliusvanBaerlehadbeensentonearthbySatan.
Theresultofitwas,that,onefinemorning,thethirdafterthedisappearanceofJacobandRosa,hewentuptothecellofCorneliusinevenagreaterragethanusual.
Thelatter,leaningwithhiselbowsonthewindow-sillandsupportinghisheadwithhistwohands,whilsthiseyeswanderedoverthedistanthazyhorizonwherethewindmillsofDortwereturningtheirsails,wasbreathingthefreshair,inordertobeabletokeepdownhistearsandtofortifyhimselfinhisphilosophy.
