           Besides,Isaachadmadethediscoverythattoomuchsunwasinjurioustotulips,andthatthisflowergrewquicker,andhadabettercolouring,withthetemperatewarmthofmorning,thanwiththepowerfulheatofthemiddaysun.HethereforefeltalmostgratefultoCorneliusvanBaerleforhavinggivenhimascreengratis.

           Maybethiswasnotquiteinaccordancewiththetruestateofthingsingeneral,andofIsaacBoxtel’sfeelingsinparticular.Itiscertainlyastonishingwhatrichcomfortgreatminds,inthemidstofmomentouscatastrophes,willderivefromtheconsolationsofphilosophy.

           Butalas!WhatwastheagonyoftheunfortunateBoxtelonseeingthewindowsofthenewstorysetoutwithbulbsandseedlingsoftulipsfortheborder,andtulipsinpots;inshort,witheverythingpertainingtothepursuitsofatulip-monomaniac!

           Therewerebundlesoflabels,cupboards,anddrawerswithcompartments,andwireguardsforthecupboards,toallowfreeaccesstotheairwhilstkeepingoutslugs,mice,dormice,andrats,allofthemverycuriousfanciersoftulipsattwothousandfrancsabulb.

           Boxtelwasquiteamazedwhenhesawallthisapparatus,buthewasnotasyetawareofthefullextentofhismisfortune.VanBaerlewasknowntobefondofeverythingthatpleasestheeye.
