           In1751,theQuakersputthemselvesattheheadoftheabolitionmovement,evenintheheartofthatNorthAmericawhere,ahundredyearslater,theWarofSecessionwastoburstforth,towhichthisquestionofslaverywasnotaforeignone.DifferentStatesintheNorthVirginia,Connecticut,Massachusetts,Pennsylvaniadecreedtheabolitionoftheslavetrade,andfreedtheslavesbroughttotheirterritoriesatgreatexpense.

           ButthecampaigncommencedbytheQuakersdidnotlimititselftothenorthernprovincesoftheNewWorld.SlaveholderswerewarmlyattackedbeyondtheAtlantic.FranceandEngland,moreparticularly,recruitedpartisansforthisjustcause."Letthecoloniesperishratherthanaprinciple!"SuchwasthegenerouscommandwhichresoundedthroughalltheOldWorld,and,inspiteofthegreatpoliticalandcommercialinterestsengagedinthequestion,itwaseffectivelytransmittedthroughEurope.

           Theimpetuswasgiven.In1807,Englandabolishedtheslave-tradeinhercolonies,andFrancefollowedherexamplein1814.ThetwopowerfulnationsexchangedatreatyonthissubjectatreatyconfirmedbyNapoleonduringtheHundredDays.
