           ButthoseMussulmansbelonged,forthemostpart,torichfamilies,whowishedtobuythembackforgold.ThePortugueserefusedtoacceptaransom,howeverlargeitmightbe.Theyhadonlytomakeforeigngold.Whattheylackedwerethearmssoindispensablethenfortheworkofthegrowingcolonies,and,tosayitall,thearmsoftheslave.

           TheMussulmanfamilies,beingunabletobuybacktheircaptiverelatives,thenofferedtoexchangethemforamuchlargernumberofblackAfricans,whomitwasonlytooeasytocarryoff.TheofferwasacceptedbythePortuguese,whofoundthatexchangetotheiradvantage,andthustheslavetradewasfoundedinEurope.

           Towardtheendofthesixteenthcenturythisodioustrafficwasgenerallyadmitted,anditwasnotrepugnanttothestillbarbarousmanners.AlltheStatesprotecteditsoastocolonizemorerapidlyandmoresurelytheislesoftheNewWorld.Infact,theslavesofblackorigincouldresisttheclimate,wherethebadlyacclimatedwhites,stillunfittosupporttheheatofintertropicalclimates,wouldhaveperishedbythousands.ThetransportofnegroestotheAmericancolonieswasthencarriedonregularlybyspecialvessels,andthisbranchoftransatlanticcommerceledtothecreationofimportantstationsondifferentpointsoftheAfricancoast.The"merchandise"costlittleinthecountryofproduction,andthereturnswereconsiderable.
