           Africa!Thatnamesoterribleunderthepresentcircumstances,thatnamewhichhemustnowsubstituteforthatofAmerica,wasnotforaninstantoutofDickSand’sthoughts.Whentheyoungnovicetracedbackthelastweeks,itwastoaskhimselfhowthe"Pilgrim"hadendedbyreachingthisdangerousshore,howithaddoubledCapeHorn,andpassedfromoneoceantotheother!Hecouldnowexplaintohimselfwhy,inspiteoftherapidmotionofhisvessel,landwassolongcominginsight,becausethelengthofthedistancewhichheshouldhavemadetoreachtheAmericancoasthadbeendoubledwithouthisknowledge.

           "Africa!Africa!"DickSandrepeated.

           Then,suddenly,whilehecalledupwithtenaciousmindalltheincidentsofthisinexplicablevoyage,hefeltthathiscompassmusthavebeeninjured.Heremembered,too,thatthefirstcompasshadbeenbroken,andthatthelog-linehadsnappedafactwhichhadmadeitimpossibleforhimtoestablishthespeedofthe"Pilgrim."
