December27.—ItoldLupinIwasexpectingGowingandCummingstodropintomorroweveningforaquietgame.Iwasinhopetheboywouldvolunteertostayin,andhelptoamusethem.Insteadofwhich,hesaid:“Oh,youhadbetterputthemoff,asIhaveaskedDaisyandFrankMutlartocome.”IsaidIcouldnotthinkofdoingsuchathing.Lupinsaid:“ThenIwillsendawire,andputoffDaisy.”Isuggestedthatapost-cardorletterwouldreachherquitesoonenough,andwouldnotbesoextravagant.
Carrie,whohadlistenedtotheaboveconversationwithapparentannoyance,directedawell-aimedshaftatLupin.Shesaid:“Lupin,whydoyouobjecttoDaisymeetingyourfather’sfriends?Isitbecausetheyarenotgoodenoughforher,or(whichisequallypossible)sheisnotgoodenoughforthem?”Lupinwasdumbfounded,andcouldmakenoreply.Whenhelefttheroom,IgaveCarrieakissofapproval.
