August4.—ThefirstpostbroughtaniceletterfromourdearsonWillie,acknowledgingatriflingpresentwhichCarriesenthim,thedaybeforeyesterdaybeinghistwentiethbirthday.Toourutteramazementheturneduphimselfintheafternoon,havingjourneyedallthewayfromOldham.Hesaidhehadgotleavefromthebank,andasMondaywasaholidayhethoughthewouldgiveusalittlesurprise.
August5,Sunday.—WehavenotseenWilliesincelastChristmas,andarepleasedtonoticewhatafineyoungmanhehasgrown.OnewouldscarcelybelievehewasCarrie’sson.Helooksmorelikeayoungerbrother.IratherdisapproveofhiswearingachecksuitonaSunday,andIthinkheoughttohavegonetochurchthismorning;buthesaidhewastiredafteryesterday’sjourney,soIrefrainedfromanyremarkonthesubject.Wehadabottleofportfordinner,anddrankdearWillie’shealth.
