February18.—Carriehasseveraltimesrecentlycalledattentiontothethinnessofmyhairatthetopofmyhead,andrecommendedmetogetitseento.Iwasthismorningtryingtolookatitbytheaidofasmallhand-glass,whensomehowmyelbowcaughtagainsttheedgeofthechestofdrawersandknockedtheglassoutofmyhandandsmashedit.Carriewasinanawfulwayaboutit,assheisratherabsurdlysuperstitious.Tomakemattersworse,mylargephotographinthedrawing-roomfellduringthenight,andtheglasscracked.
