Itappearshewastryingtoshuthisbedroomdoor,whichissituatedjustatthetopofthestaircase,andunknowntohimapieceofcorkthedoghadbeenplayingwithhadgotbetweenthedoor,andpreventeditshutting;andinpullingthedoorhard,togiveitanextraslam,thehandlecameoffinhishands,andhefellbackwardsdownstairs.
Onhearingthis,Lupinsuddenlyjumpedupfromthecouchandrushedoutoftheroomsideways.Cummingslookedveryindignant,andremarkeditwasverypoorfunamannearlybreakinghisback;andthoughIhadmysuspicionsthatLupinwaslaughing,IassuredCummingsthathehadonlyrunouttoopenthedoortoafriendheexpected.Cummingssaidthiswasthesecondtimehehadbeenlaidup,andwehadneversenttoinquire.IsaidIknewnothingaboutit.Cummingssaid:“ItwasmentionedintheBicycleNews.”

IwishMrs.Jameswouldn’tcometothehouse.Whenevershedoesshealwaysintroducessomenew-fandangledrubbishintoCarrie’shead.OneofthesedaysIfeelsureIshalltellhershe’snotwelcome.IamsureitwasMrs.JameswhoputCarrieuptowritingondarkslate-colouredpaperwithwhiteink.Nonsense!
