April18.—Waterallrightagaininthecistern.Mrs.James,ofSutton,calledintheafternoon.SheandCarriedrapedthemantelpieceinthedrawing-room,andputlittletoyspiders,frogsandbeetlesalloverit,asMrs.Jamessaysit’squitethefashion.ItwasMrs.James’suggestion,andofcourseCarriealwaysdoeswhatMrs.Jamessuggests.Formypart,Ipreferredthemantelpieceasitwas;butthere,I’maplainman,anddon’tpretendtobeinthefashion.
April19.—Ournext-doorneighbour,Mr.Griffin,called,andinaratheroffensivetoneaccusedme,or“someone,”ofboringaholeinhiscisternandlettingouthiswatertosupplyourcistern,whichadjoinedhis.Hesaidheshouldhavehisrepaired,andsendusinthebill.
