Theironyofitwasthatshewouldnothaveexperiencedthatfinalepisodeatall,thatextravaganceofhorror,onemightsay,ifthefistfightbetweenLouisCreedandMr.IrwinGoldmanofDearbornhadtakenplaceatthemorningvisitinghours(10to11:30A.M.)insteadofattheafternoonvisitinghours(2to3:30P.M.).Rachelhadnotbeeninattendanceatthemorningvisitinghours;shesimplyhadnotbeenabletocome.ShesatathomewithJudCrandallandSteveMasterton.Louishadnoideahowheevercouldhavegottenthroughthepreviousforty-eighthoursorsowithoutJudandSteve.
ItwaswellforLouis—wellforallthreeoftheremainingfamilymembers—thatStevehadshownupaspromptlyashehad,becauseLouiswasatleasttemporarilyunabletomakeanykindofdecision,evenonesominorasgivinghiswifeashottomuteherdeepgrief.
