Gage’svirushungonforaweek,thenclearedup.Aweeklaterhecamedownwithaboutofbronchitis.ElliealsocaughtthisandthenRachel;duringtheperiodbeforeChristmas,thethreeofthemwentaroundhackinglikeveryoldandwheezyhuntingdogs.Louisdidn’tcatchit,andRachelseemedtoholdthisagainsthim.
ThefinalweekofclassesattheuniversitywasahecticoneforLouis,Steve,Surrendra,andCharlton.Therewasnoflu—atleastnotyet—butplentyofbronchitisandseveralcasesofmononucleosisandwalkingpneumonia.TwodaysbeforeclassesbrokeforChristmas,sixmoaning,drunkenfraternityboyswerebroughtinbytheirconcernedfriends.TherewereafewmomentsofconfusiongruesomelyreminiscentofthePascowaffair.Allsixofthedamnedfoolshadcrammedontoonemedium-lengthtoboggan(thesixthhadactuallybeensittingontheshouldersofthetailman,fromwhatLouiscouldpiecetogether)andhadsetofftoridethetoboggandownthehillabovethesteamplant.Hilarious.Exceptthataftergainingalotofspeed,thetobogganhadwanderedoffcourseandstruckoneoftheCivilWarcannons.Thescorewastwobrokenarms,abrokenwrist,atotalofsevenbrokenribs,aconcussion,pluscontusionsfartoonumeroustocount.Onlytheboyridingontheshouldersofthetail-enderhadescapedcompletelyunscathed.Whenthetobogganhitthecannon,thisfortunatesoulflewoveritandlandedheadfirstinasnowbank.
