           Iwonderedtomyselfwhynooneelsehadseenhimstandingsofaraway,beforehewassuddenly,impossiblysavingmylife.Withchagrin,Irealizedtheprobablecause-nooneelsewasasawareofEdwardasIalwayswas.NooneelsewatchedhimthewayIdid.Howpitiful.

           Edwardwasneversurroundedbycrowdsofcuriousbystanderseagerforhisfirsthandaccount.Peopleavoidedhimasusual.TheCullensandtheHalessatatthesametableasalways,noteating,talkingonlyamongthemselves.Noneofthem,especiallyEdward,glancedmywayanymore.

           Whenhesatnexttomeinclass,asfarfrommeasthetablewouldallow,heseemedtotallyunawareofmypresence.Onlynowandthen,whenhisfistswouldsuddenlyballup-skinstretchedevenwhiteroverthebones-didIwonderifhewasn’tquiteasobliviousasheappeared.
