Iwalkedupthestairsslowly,aheavystuporcloudingmymind.IwentthroughthemotionsofgettingreadyforbedwithoutpayinganyattentiontowhatIwasdoing.Itwasn’tuntilIwasintheshower-thewatertoohot,burningmyskin-thatIrealizedIwasfreezing.Ishudderedviolentlyforseveralminutesbeforethesteamingspraycouldfinallyrelaxmyrigidmuscles.ThenIstoodintheshower,tootiredtomove,untilthehotwaterbegantorunout.
Istumbledout,wrappingmyselfsecurelyinatowel,tryingtoholdtheheatfromthewaterinsotheachingshiverswouldn’treturn.Idressedforbedswiftlyandclimbedundermyquilt,curlingintoaball,huggingmyselftokeepwarm.Afewsmallshudderstrembledthroughme.
Mymindstillswirleddizzily,fullofimagesIcouldn’tunderstand,andsomeIfoughttorepress.Nothingseemedclearatfirst,butasIfellgraduallyclosertounconsciousness,afewcertaintiesbecameevident.
