           WeplannedtogotodinneratalittleItalianrestaurantontheboardwalk,butthedressshoppinghadn’ttakenaslongaswe’dexpected.JessandAngelaweregoingtotaketheirclothesbacktothecarandthenwalkdowntothebay.ItoldthemIwouldmeetthemattherestaurantinanhour-Iwantedtolookforabookstore.Theywerebothwillingtocomewithme,butIencouragedthemtogohavefun-theydidn’tknowhowpreoccupiedIcouldgetwhensurroundedbybooks;itwassomethingIpreferredtodoalone.Theywalkedofftothecarchatteringhappily,andIheadedinthedirectionJesspointedout.

           Ihadnotroublefindingthebookstore,butitwasn’twhatIwaslookingfor.Thewindowswerefullofcrystals,dream-catchers,andbooksaboutspiritualhealing.Ididn’tevengoinside.ThroughtheglassIcouldseeafifty-year-oldwomanwithlong,grayhairwornstraightdownherback,cladinadressrightoutofthesixties,smilingwelcominglyfrombehindthecounter.IdecidedthatwasoneconversationIcouldskip.Therehadtobeanormalbookstoreintown.

           Imeanderedthroughthestreets,whichwerefillingupwithend-of-the-workdaytraffic,andhopedIwasheadedtowarddowntown.Iwasn’tpayingasmuchattentionasIshouldtowhereIwasgoing;Iwaswrestlingwithdespair.Iwastryingsohardnottothinkabouthim,andwhatAngelahadsaid...
