Atthebackofthebayitwasalreadyquitedark.Treebeardliftedtwogreatvesselsandstoodthemonthetable.Theyseemedtobefilledwithwater;butheheldhishandsoverthem,andimmediatelytheybegantoglow,onewithagoldenandtheotherwitharichgreenlight;andtheblendingofthetwolightslitthebay;asifthesunofsummerwasshiningthrougharoofofyoungleaves.Lookingback,thehobbitssawthatthetreesinthecourthadalsobeguntoglow,faintlyatfirst,butsteadilyquickening,untileveryleafwasedgedwithlight:somegreen,somegold,someredascopper;whilethetree-trunkslookedlikepillarsmouldedoutofluminousstone.
’Well,well,nowwecantalkagain,’saidTreebeard.’YouarethirstyIexpect.Perhapsyouarealsotired.Drinkthis!’Hewenttothebackofthebay,andthentheysawthatseveraltallstonejarsstoodthere,withheavylids.Heremovedoneofthelids,anddippedinagreatladle,andwithitfilledthreebowls,oneverylargebowl,andtwosmallerones.
