Thedrinkwaslikewater,indeedverylikethetasteofthedraughtstheyhaddrunkfromtheEntwashnear,thebordersoftheforest,andyettherewassomescentorsavourinitwhichtheycouldnotdescribe:itwasfaint,butitremindedthemofthesmellofadistantwoodbornefromafarbyacoolbreezeatnight.Theeffectofthedraughtbeganatthetoes,androsesteadilythrougheverylimb,bringingrefreshmentandvigourasitcoursedupwards,righttothetipsofthehair.Indeedthehobbitsfeltthatthehairontheirheadswasactuallystandingup,wavingandcurlingandgrowing.AsforTreebeard,hefirstlavedhisfeetinthebasinbeyondthearch,andthenhedrainedhisbowlatonedraught,onelong,slowdraught.Thehobbitsthoughthewouldneverstop.
Atlasthesetthebowldownagain.’Ah-ah,’hesighed.’Hm,hoom,nowwecantalkeasier.Youcansitonthefloor,andIwillliedown;thatwillpreventthisdrinkfromrisingtomyheadandsendingmetosleep.’
Ontherightsideofthebaytherewasagreatbedonlowlegs;notmorethanacoupleoffeethigh,covereddeepindriedgrassandbracken.Treebeardloweredhimselfslowlyontothis(withonlytheslightestsignofbendingathismiddle),untilhelayatfulllength,withhisarmsbehindhishead,lookingupattheceiling.uponwhichlightswereflickering,liketheplayofleavesinthesunshine.MerryandPippinsatbesidehimonpillowsofgrass.
