Treebeard

           Atthefarendtherock-wallwassheer,butatthebottomithadbeenhollowedbackintoashallowbaywithanarchedroof:theonlyroofofthehall,savethebranchesofthetrees,whichattheinnerendovershadowedallthegroundleavingonlyabroadopenpathinthemiddle.Alittlestreamescapedfromthespringsabove,andleavingthemainwater,felltinklingdownthesheerfaceofthewall,pouringinsilverdrops,likeafinecurtaininfrontofthearchedbay.Thewaterwasgatheredagainintoastonebasininthefloorbetweenthetrees,andthenceitspilledandflowedawaybesidetheopenpath,outtorejointheEntwashinitsjourneythroughtheforest.

           ’Hm!Hereweare!’saidTreebeard,breakinghislongsilence.’Ihavebroughtyouaboutseventythousandent-strides,butwhatthatcomestointhemeasurementofyourlandIdonotknow.AnyhowweareneartherootsoftheLastMountain.PartofthenameofthisplacemightbeWellinghall,ifitwereturnedintoyourlanguage.Ilikeit.Wewillstayheretonight.Hesetthemdownonthegrassbetweentheaislesofthetrees,andtheyfollowedhimtowardsthegreatarch.Thehobbitsnownoticedthatashewalkedhiskneeshardlybent,buthislegsopenedinagreatstride.Heplantedhisbigtoes(andtheywereindeedbig,andverybroad)onthegroundfirst,beforeanyotherpartofhisfeet.

           ForamomentTreebeardstoodundertherainofthefallingspring,andtookadeepbreath;thenhelaughed,andpassedinside.Agreatstonetablestoodthere,butnochairs.
