Theypassedthroughtheruinedtunnelandstooduponaheapofstones,gazingatthedarkrockofOrthanc,anditsmanywindows,amenacestillinthedesolationthatlayallaboutit.Thewatershadnownearlyallsubsided.Hereandtheregloomypoolsremained,coveredwithscumandwreckage;butmostofthewidecirclewasbareagain,awildernessofslimeandtumbledrock,pittedwithblackenedholes,anddottedwithpostsandpillarsleaningdrunkenlythiswayandthat.Attherimoftheshatteredbowltherelayvastmoundsandslopes,liketheshinglescastupbyagreatstorm;andbeyondthemthegreenandtangledvalleyranupintothelongravinebetweenthedarkarmsofthemountains.Acrossthewastetheysawriderspickingtheirway;theywerecomingfromthenorthside,andalreadytheyweredrawingneartoOrthanc.
