           Herfatherwasdyingthere,Mrs.Ramsayknew.Hewasleavingthemfatherless.Scoldinganddemonstrating(howtomakeabed,howtoopenawindow,withhandsthatshutandspreadlikeaFrenchwoman’s)allhadfoldeditselfquietlyabouther,whenthegirlspoke,as,afteraflightthroughthesunshinethewingsofabirdfoldthemselvesquietlyandtheblueofitsplumagechangesfrombrightsteeltosoftpurple.Shehadstoodtheresilentfortherewasnothingtobesaid.Hehadcancerofthethroat.Attherecollectionhowshehadstoodthere,howthegirlhadsaid,"Athomethemountainsaresobeautiful,"andtherewasnohope,nohopewhatever,shehadaspasmofirritation,andspeakingsharply,saidtoJames:

           "Standstill.Don’tbetiresome,"sothatheknewinstantlythatherseveritywasreal,andstraightenedhislegandshemeasuredit.
