TheFairfieldCountyprosecutor,Mr.Luse,calledonlyDr.HaroldT.Brown,whostatedonthewitnessstandthathehadtreatedBillyattheageoffifteenandhadhimsenttotheColumbusStateHospitalforthreemonths.Hewould,hesaid,inthelightofcurrentknowledge,havechangedhisdiagnosisfromhystericalneurosiswithpassive-aggressivefeaturestoanewdiagnosisofdissociativedisorderwithpossiblemultiplepersonality.However,Browntoldthecourt,hehadbeensentbytheprosecutingattorneytointerviewBillyinAthens,andduringthatvisit,BillyMilliganseemedtohaveknowledgeoftheactshehadcommitted.BrownsaidMilliganwasprobablynotreallyamultiplepersonality,sincemultiplepersonalitieswerenotsupposedtohaveknowledgeoftheactionsofthealteregos.
Whentheyleftthecourtroom,GoldsberryandThompsonwereoptimisticandBillywaselated.HewassureJudgeJacksonwouldtakethetestimonyoffourhighlyregardedpsychiatristsandapsychologistoverthetestimonyofDr.Brown.
