Hewasdeeplyconcernedwiththeissueofcriminalresponsibility.Ittroubledhimthathiswordsmightbemisused,bringingdiscredittothemultiplepersonalitydiagnosis,tootherpatientswhohadthissyndrome,totheprofessionandtopsychiatrictestimony.IfJudgeFlowersacceptedhisjudgmentthatthisdissociativedisorder,classifiedthusfarasaneurosis,wasreasontofindapatientnotguiltybyreasonofinsanity,heknewitwouldsetlegalprecedentinOhio,andperhapsinthecountry.
Dr.GeorgebelievedBillyMilliganhadnothadcontroloverhisactionsonthosethreefatefuldayslastOctober.Itwashisjobtolearnmoreandtopushintonewareas.Itwashisresponsibilitytounderstandthiscase,tounderstandBillyinawaythatwouldbeusefultosocietyindealingwithsimilarproblems.
