IknowIshouldn’thangaroundthecollegewhenI’mthoroughatthelab,butseeingtheyoungmenandwomengoingbackandforthcarryingbooksandhearingthemtalkaboutallthethingsthey’relearningintheirclassesexcitesme.IwishIcouldsitandtalkwiththemovercoffeeintheCampusBowlLuncheonettewhentheygettogethertoargueaboutbooksandpoliticsandideas.It’sexcitingtohearthemtalkingaboutpoetryandscienceandphilosophy—aboutShakespeareandMilton;NewtonandEinsteinandFreud;aboutPlatoandHegelandKant,andalltheothernamesthatecholikegreatchurchbellsinmymind.
SometimesIlisteninontheconversationsatthetablesaroundme,andpretendI’macollegestudent,eventhoughI’malotolderthantheyare.Icarrybooksaround,andI’vestartedtosmokeapipe.It’ssilly,butsinceIbelongatthelabIfeelasifI’mapartoftheuniversity.Ihatetogohometothatlonelyroom.

I’vemadefriendswithsomeoftheboysattheCampusBowl.TheywerearguingaboutwhetherornotShakespearereallywroteShakespeare’splays.Oneoftheboys—thefatonewiththesweatyface—saidthatMarlowewroteallofShakespeare’splays.ButLenny,theshortkidwiththedarkglasses,didn’tbelievethatbusinessaboutMarlowe,andhesaidthateveryoneknewthatSirFrancisBaconwrotetheplaysbecauseShakespearehadneverbeentocollegeandneverhadtheeducationthatshowsupinthoseplays.
