           Notmuchtimeforwork—betweenthenightlyclub-hoppingandthemorninghangovers.ItwasonlywithaspirinandsomethingFayconcoctedformethatIwasabletofinishmylinguisticanalysisofUrduverbformsandsendthepapertotheInternationalLinguisticsBulletin.ItwillsendthelinguistsbacktoIndiawiththeirtaperecorders,becauseitunderminesthecriticalsuperstructureoftheirmethodology.

           Ican’thelpbutadmirethestructurallinguistswhohavecarvedoutforthemselvesalinguisticdisciplinebasedonthedeteriorationofwrittencommunication.Anothercaseofmendevotingtheirlivestostudyingmoreandmoreaboutlessandless—fillingvolumesandlibrarieswiththesubtlelinguisticanalysisofthegrunt.Nothingwrongwiththat,butitshouldnotbeusedasanexcusetodestroythestabilityoflanguage.

           Faystillwantstogooutdancingallthetime.Lastnightstartedoutwithusdrinkinganddancingatthe"WhiteHorseClub,andfromtheretoBenny’sHideaway,andthenontothePinkSlipper...andafterthatIdon’tremembermanyoftheplaces,butwedanceduntilIwasreadytodrop.
