HewonderedwhatLaurawouldsaywhenshesawhim,andthenherememberedthatLaurawouldn’tsayanythingeveragainandhesawhisface,inthemirror,tremble,butonlyforamoment.

"Ilooklikeshit,"saidShadow.
"Ofcourseyoudo,"agreedWednesday.
Wednesdaytookanassortmentofsnackfooduptothecashregisterandpaidforthatandtheirgas,changinghismindtwiceaboutwhetherhewasdoingitwithplasticorwithcash,totheirritationofthegum-chewingyoungladybehindthetill.ShadowwatchedasWednesdaybecameincreasinglyflusteredandapologetic.Heseemedveryold,suddenly.Thegirlgavehimhiscashback,andputthepurchaseonthecard,andthengavehimthecardreceiptandtookhiscash,thenreturnedthecashandtookadifferentcard.Wednesdaywasobviouslyonthevergeoftears,anoldmanmadehelplessbytheimplacableplasticmarchofthemodernworld.
Theywalkedoutofthewarmgasstation,andtheirbreathsteamedintheair.
Ontheroadoncemore:browninggrassmeadowsslippedpastoneachsideofthem.Thetreeswereleaflessanddead.Twoblackbirdsstaredatthemfromatelegraphwire.
"Hey,Wednesday."
