Herememberedthatmoment,andhetreasuredit,justasherememberedthesweetnessofacabbage-heart,thetarttasteofplums,thecrunchofapples,thegreasydelightofroastedfish.
Andnowhesawthefacesinthefirelight,allofthemlookingathimashewasledoutfromthehutforthefirsttime,whichwastheonlytime.Sothatwaswhatpeoplelookedlike.Raisedindarkness,hehadneverseenfaces.Everythingwassonew.Sostrange.Thebonfirelighthurthiseyes.Theypulledontheropearoundhisneck,toleadhimtothespacebetweenthetwobonfires,wherethemanwaitedforhim.
Andwhenthefirstbladewasraisedinthefirelight,whatacheerwentupfromthecrowdandthechildfromthedarknessbegantolaughandlaughwiththem,indelightandinfreedom.
