           Itdidnotmatter,Shadowdecided,ifyouhaddonewhatyouhadbeenconvictedofornot.Inhisexperienceeveryonehemetinprisonwasaggrievedaboutsomething:therewasalwayssomethingtheauthoritieshadgotwrong,somethingtheysaidyoudidwhenyoudidn’t-oryoudidn’tdoquiteliketheysaidyoudid.Whatwasimportantwasthattheyhadgottenyou.

           Hehadnoticeditinthefirstfewdays,wheneverything,fromtheslangtothebadfood,wasnew.Despitethemiseryandtheutterskin-crawlinghorrorofincarceration,hewasbreathingrelief.
