           Themanwiththeleonineheadlaystretchedoutupontheraft,whichtippedbackandforthwiththemotionofthewater.AsMrs.McKiscoreachedforitasuddentiltstruckherarmuproughly,whereuponthemanstartedupandpulledheronboard.

           "Iwasafraidithityou."Hisvoicewasslowandshy;hehadoneofthesaddestfacesRosemaryhadeverseen,thehighcheekbonesofanIndian,alongupperlip,andenormousdeep-setdarkgoldeneyes.Hehadspokenoutofthesideofhismouth,asifhehopedhiswordswouldreachMrs.McKiscobyacircuitousandunobtrusiveroute;inaminutehehadshovedoffintothewaterandhislongbodylaymotionlesstowardshore.

           RosemaryandMrs.McKiscowatchedhim.Whenhehadexhaustedhismomentumheabruptlybentdouble,histhinthighsroseabovethesurface,andhedisappearedtotally,leavingscarcelyafleckoffoambehind.

           "He’sagoodswimmer,"Rosemarysaid.

           Mrs.McKisco’sanswercamewithsurprisingviolence.

           "Well,he’sarottenmusician."Sheturnedtoherhusband,whoaftertwounsuccessfulattemptshadmanagedtoclimbontheraft,andhavingattainedhisbalancewastryingtomakesomekindofcompensatoryflourish,achievingonlyanextrastagger."IwasjustsayingthatAbeNorthmaybeagoodswimmerbuthe’sarottenmusician."

           "Yes,"agreedMcKisco,grudgingly.Obviouslyhehadcreatedhiswife’sworld,andallowedherfewlibertiesinit.

           "Antheil’smyman."Mrs.McKiscoturnedchallenginglytoRosemary,"AnthielandJoyce.
