Dickandthelastyoungmandoveoverthesideandswamtotheboard.DickwasgoingtotryhisliftingtrickandNicolebegantowatchwithsmilingscorn.Thisphysicalshowing-offforRosemaryirritatedhermostofall.

ButastheycamebacktotheswimmersNicolewatchedforasightofDick’sface.Itwasfullofannoyanceassheexpected,becausehehaddonethethingwitheaseonlytwoyearsago.
Thesecondtimehewasmorecareful.Herosealittletestingthebalanceofhisburden,settleddownagainonhisknee;then,grunting"Alleyoop!"begantorise—butbeforehecouldreallystraightenout,hislegssuddenlybuckledandheshovedtheboardawaywithhisfeettoavoidbeingstruckastheyfelloff.
