           Heretherewasawellwiththeboardingarounditdankandslipperyevenonthebrightestdays.Shewentupthestairsontheothersideandintothevegetablegarden;shewalkedratherquickly;shelikedtobeactive,thoughattimesshegaveanimpressionofreposethatwasatoncestaticandevocative.Thiswasbecausesheknewfewwordsandbelievedinnone,andintheworldshewasrathersilent,contributingjusthershareofurbanehumorwithaprecisionthatapproachedmeagreness.Butatthemomentwhenstrangerstendedtogrowuncomfortableinthepresenceofthiseconomyshewouldseizethetopicandrushoffwithit,feverishlysurprisedwithherselfthenbringitbackandrelinquishitabruptly,almosttimidly,likeanobedientretriever,havingbeenadequateandsomethingmore.

           ShestoodintheancienthillvillageofTarmes.Thevillaanditsgroundsweremadeoutofarowofpeasantdwellingsthatabuttedontheclifffivesmallhouseshadbeencombinedtomakethehouseandfourdestroyedtomakethegarden.
