           ButshewasstillafraidofDick,whostoodnearher,leaning,characteristically,againsttheironfencethatrimmedthehorseshoe;andthispromptedhertosay:"IcanrememberhowIstoodwaitingforyouinthegardenholdingallmyselfinmyarmslikeabasketofflowers.ItwasthattomeanyhowIthoughtIwassweetwaitingtohandthatbaskettoyou."

           Hebreathedoverhershoulderandturnedherinsistentlyabout;shekissedhimseveraltimes,herfacegettingbigeverytimeshecameclose,herhandsholdinghimbytheshoulders.

           Suddenlytherewasaboomingfromthewineslopesacrossthelake;cannonswereshootingathail-bearingcloudsinordertobreakthem.Thelightsofthepromenadewentoff,wentonagain.Thenthestormcameswiftly,firstfallingfromtheheavens,thendoublyfallingintorrentsfromthemountainsandwashinglouddowntheroadsandstoneditches;withitcameadark,frighteningskyandsavagefilamentsoflightningandworld-splittingthunder,whileragged,destroyingcloudsfledalongpastthehotel.Mountainsandlakedisappearedthehotelcrouchedamidtumult,chaosanddarkness.

           BythistimeDickandNicolehadreachedthevestibule,whereBabyWarrenandthethreeMarmoraswereanxiouslyawaitingthem.Itwasexcitingcomingoutofthewetfogwiththedoorsbanging,tostandandlaughandquiverwithemotion,windintheirearsandrainontheirclothes.NowintheballroomtheorchestrawasplayingaStrausswaltz,highandconfusing.
