           Nostimuliworkeduponthem,novoicescalledthemfromwithout,nofragmentsoftheirownthoughtscamesuddenlyfromthemindsofothers,andmissingtheclamorofEmpiretheyfeltthatlifewasnotcontinuinghere.

           "Let’sonlystaythreedays,Mother,"Rosemarysaidwhentheywerebackintheirrooms.Outsidealightwindblewtheheataround,strainingitthroughthetreesandsendinglittlehotguststhroughtheshutters.

           RosemarystoppedinthelobbyandspoketoGaussepèreabouttrains.Theconcierge,lounginginlight-brownkhakibythedesk,staredatherrigidly,thensuddenlyrememberedthemannersofhismétier.Shetookthebusandrodewithapairofobsequiouswaiterstothestation,embarrassedbytheirdeferentialsilence,wantingtourgethem:"Goon,talk,enjoyyourselves.Itdoesn’tbotherme."
