Vacationplanningtriumphsovermemoryandall’srightwiththeworld.
NewBaytownhadsleptforalongtime.Themenwhogovernedit,politically,morally,economically,hadsolongcontinuedthattheirwayswereset.TheTownManager,thecouncil,thejudges,thepolicewereeternal.TheTownManagersoldequipmenttothetownship,andthejudgesfixedtrafficticketsastheyhadforsolongthattheydidnotrememberitasillegalpractice—atleastthebookssaiditwas.Beingnormalmen,theysurelydidnotconsideritimmoral.Allmenaremoral.Onlytheirneighborsarenot.
Theyellowafternoonhadthewarmbreathofsummer.Afewearlyseasonpeople,thosewithoutchildrentoholdthemglueduntilschoolwasout,weremovinginthestreets,strangers.Somecarscamethrough,towingsmallboatsandbigoutboardmotorsontrailers.Ethanwouldhaveknownwithhiseyesclosedthattheyweresummerpeoplebywhattheybought—coldcutsandprocesscheese,crackersandtinnedsardines.
