AndwhiletheCalifornianswantedmanythings,accumulation,socialsuccess,amusement,luxury,andacuriousbankingsecurity,thenewbarbarianswantedonlytwothings—landandfood;andtothemthetwowereone.AndwhereasthewantsoftheCalifornianswerenebulousandundefined,thewantsoftheOkieswerebesidetheroads,lyingtheretobeseenandcoveted:thegoodfieldswithwatertobedugfor,thegoodgreenfields,earthtocrumbleexperimentallyinthehand,grasstosmell,oatenstalkstochewuntilthesharpsweetnesswasinthethroat.Amanmightlookatafallowfieldandknow,andseeinhismindthathisownbendingbackandhisownstrainingarmswouldbringthecabbagesintothelight,andthegoldeneatingcorn,theturnipsandcarrots.
Andahomelesshungryman,drivingtheroadswithhiswifebesidehimandhisthinchildreninthebackseat,couldlookatthefallowfieldswhichmightproducefoodbutnotprofit,andthatmancouldknowhowafallowfieldisasinandtheunusedlandacrimeagainstthethinchildren.Andsuchamandrovealongtheroadsandknewtemptationateveryfield,andknewthelusttotakethesefieldsandmakethemgrowstrengthforhischildrenandalittlecomfortforhiswife.Thetemptationwasbeforehimalways.Thefieldsgoadedhim,andthecompanyditcheswithgoodwaterflowingwereagoadtohim.
