Followingthemwereseveralhundredwomenandchildren,theformerbearingupontheirheadsgreatburdensofcookingpots,householdutensilsandivory.Intherearwereahundredwarriors,similarinallrespectstotheadvanceguard.
Thattheymoregreatlyfearedanattackfromtherearthanwhateverunknownenemieslurkedintheiradvancewasevidencedbytheformationofthecolumn;andsuchwasthefact,fortheywerefleeingfromthewhiteman’ssoldierswhohadsoharassedthemforrubberandivorythattheyhadturnedupontheirconquerorsonedayandmassacredawhiteofficerandasmalldetachmentofhisblacktroops.

Thatnighttheblacksoldiersofthewhitemanhadhadmeata-plenty,andthislittleremnantofaoncepowerfultribehadslunkoffintothegloomyjungletowardtheunknown,andfreedom.
Butthatwhichmeantfreedomandthepursuitofhappinesstothesesavageblacksmeantconsternationanddeathtomanyofthewilddenizensoftheirnewhome.
