AfterClaytonhadplungedintothejungle,thesailors—mutineersoftheArrow—fellintoadiscussionoftheirnextstep;butononepointallwereagreed—thattheyshouldhastentoputofftotheanchoredArrow,wheretheycouldatleastbesafefromthespearsoftheirunseenfoe.Andso,whileJanePorterandEsmeraldawerebarricadingthemselveswithinthecabin,thecowardlycrewofcutthroatswerepullingrapidlyfortheirshipinthetwoboatsthathadbroughtthemashore.
SomuchhadTarzanseenthatdaythathisheadwasinawhirlofwonder.Butthemostwonderfulsightofall,tohim,wasthefaceofthebeautifulwhitegirl.
Hereatlastwasoneofhisownkind;ofthathewaspositive.Andtheyoungmanandthetwooldmen;they,too,weremuchashehadpicturedhisownpeopletobe.
Butdoubtlesstheywereasferociousandcruelasothermenhehadseen.Thefactthattheyaloneofallthepartywereunarmedmightaccountforthefactthattheyhadkillednoone.Theymightbeverydifferentifprovidedwithweapons.
TarzanhadseentheyoungmanpickupthefallenrevolverofthewoundedSnipesandhideitawayinhisbreast;andhehadalsoseenhimslipitcautiouslytothegirlassheenteredthecabindoor.
Hedidnotunderstandanythingofthemotivesbehindallthathehadseen;but,somehow,intuitivelyhelikedtheyoungmanandthetwooldmen,andforthegirlhehadastrangelongingwhichhescarcelyunderstood.
