Amongtheotherbookswereaprimer,somechild’sreaders,numerouspicturebooks,andagreatdictionary.Alloftheseheexamined,butthepicturescaughthisfancymost,thoughthestrangelittlebugswhichcoveredthepageswheretherewerenopicturesexcitedhiswonderanddeepestthought.
Squattinguponhishaunchesonthetabletopinthecabinhisfatherhadbuilt—hissmooth,brown,nakedlittlebodybentoverthebookwhichrestedinhisstrongslenderhands,andhisgreatshockoflong,blackhairfallingabouthiswell-shapedheadandbright,intelligenteyes—Tarzanoftheapes,littleprimitiveman,presentedapicturefilled,atonce,withpathosandwithpromise—anallegoricalfigureoftheprimordialgropingthroughtheblacknightofignorancetowardthelightoflearning.
