ItwassoondiscoveredthatTarzanwasmissing,andTublatwasstronglyopposedtosendingassistance.Kerchakhimselfhadnolikingforthestrangelittlewaif,sohelistenedtoTublat,and,finally,withashrugofhisshoulders,turnedbacktothepileofleavesonwhichhehadmadehisbed.
ButKalawasofadifferentmind;infact,shehadnotwaitedbuttolearnthatTarzanwasabsentereshewasfairlyflyingthroughthemattedbranchestowardthepointfromwhichthecriesofthegorillawerestillplainlyaudible.
Darknesshadnowfallen,andanearlymoonwassendingitsfaintlighttocaststrange,grotesqueshadowsamongthedensefoliageoftheforest.
Hereandtherethebrilliantrayspenetratedtoearth,butforthemostparttheyonlyservedtoaccentuatetheStygianblacknessofthejungle’sdepths.
