Hehadtakenscarceadozenstepstowardthejunglewhenagreatformroseupbeforehimfromtheshadowsofalowbush.AtfirsthethoughtitwasoneofhisownpeoplebutinanotherinstantherealizedthatitwasBolgani,thehugegorilla.
SoclosewashethattherewasnochanceforflightandlittleTarzanknewthathemuststandandfightforhislife;forthesegreatbeastswerethedeadlyenemiesofhistribe,andneitheronenortheothereveraskedorgavequarter.
HadTarzanbeenafull-grownbullapeofthespeciesofhistribehewouldhavebeenmorethanamatchforthegorilla,butbeingonlyalittleEnglishboy,thoughenormouslymuscularforsuch,hestoodnochanceagainsthiscruelantagonist.Inhisveins,though,flowedthebloodofthebestofaraceofmightyfighters,andbackofthiswasthetrainingofhisshortlifetimeamongthefiercebrutesofthejungle.
Heknewnofear,asweknowit;hislittleheartbeatthefasterbutfromtheexcitementandexhilarationofadventure.
