Thetribetowhichhebelongedroamedatractextending,roughly,twenty-fivemilesalongtheseacoastandsomefiftymilesinland.Thistheytraversedalmostcontinually,occasionallyremainingformonthsinonelocality;butastheymovedthroughthetreeswithgreatspeedtheyoftencoveredtheterritoryinaveryfewdays.
Muchdependeduponfoodsupply,climaticconditions,andtheprevalenceofanimalsofthemoredangerousspecies;thoughKerchakoftenledthemonlongmarchesfornootherreasonthanthathehadtiredofremaininginthesameplace.
Atnighttheysleptwheredarknessovertookthem,lyingupontheground,andsometimescoveringtheirheads,andmoreseldomtheirbodies,withthegreatleavesoftheelephant’sear.Twoorthreemightliecuddledineachother’sarmsforadditionalwarmthifthenightwerechill,andthusTarzanhadsleptinKala’sarmsnightlyforalltheseyears.
