Heknewthat,armedonlywithanax,hischanceswiththisferociousmonsterweresmallindeed—andAlice;OGod,hethought,whatwillbecomeofAlice?
Therewasyetaslightchanceofreachingthecabin.Heturnedandrantowardit,shoutinganalarmtohiswifetoruninandclosethegreatdoorincasetheapecutoffhisretreat.
LadyGreystokehadbeensittingalittlewayfromthecabin,andwhensheheardhiscryshelookeduptoseetheapespringingwithalmostincredibleswiftness,forsolargeandawkwardananimal,inanefforttoheadoffClayton.
Withalowcryshesprangtowardthecabin,and,assheentered,gaveabackwardglancewhichfilledhersoulwithterror,forthebrutehadinterceptedherhusband,whonowstoodatbaygraspinghisaxwithbothhandsreadytoswingitupontheinfuriatedanimalwhenheshouldmakehisfinalcharge.
