Forafewmomentstheblacksheldtheirgroundwithintheentrancetothestreet,buttherevolvers,riflesandcutlassesoftheFrenchmencrumpledthenativespearmenandstruckdowntheblackarcherswiththeirbowshalfdrawn.
Soonthebattleturnedtoawildrout,andthentoagrimmassacre;fortheFrenchsailorshadseenbitsofD’Arnot’suniformuponseveraloftheblackwarriorswhoopposedthem.
Theysparedthechildrenandthoseofthewomenwhomtheywerenotforcedtokillinself-defense,butwhenatlengththeystopped,parting,bloodcoveredandsweating,itwasbecausetherelivedtoopposethemnosinglewarriorofallthesavagevillageofMbonga.
