NotwithstandingthatbothClaytonandhiswifekeptasharplookouttheysawnothingoflargeranimals,thoughontwooccasionstheyhadseentheirlittlesimianneighborscomescreamingandchatteringfromthenear-byridge,castingfrightenedglancesbackovertheirlittleshoulders,andevincingasplainlyasthoughbyspeechthattheywerefleeingsometerriblethingwhichlayconcealedthere.
JustbeforeduskClaytonfinishedhisladder,and,fillingagreatbasinwithwaterfromthenear-bystream,thetwomountedtothecomparativesafetyoftheiraerialchamber.
Asitwasquitewarm,Claytonhadleftthesidecurtainsthrownbackovertheroof,andastheysat,likeTurks,upontheirblankets,LadyAlice,straininghereyesintothedarkeningshadowsofthewood,suddenlyreachedoutandgraspedClayton’sarms.
