Thisworkwasnotcompleteduntillongafterdark,themenbuildingahugefireinthecenteroftheclearingtogivethemlighttoworkby.
Whenallwassafeaspossibleagainstattackofwildbeastsandsavagemen,LieutenantCharpentierplacedsentriesaboutthelittlecampandthetiredandhungrymenthrewthemselvesuponthegroundtosleep.
Thegroansofthewounded,mingledwiththeroaringandgrowlingofthegreatbeastswhichthenoiseandfirelighthadattracted,keptsleep,exceptinitsmostfitfulform,fromthetiredeyes.Itwasasadandhungrypartythatlaythroughthelongnightprayingfordawn.
TheblackswhohadseizedD’Arnothadnotwaitedtoparticipateinthefightwhichfollowed,butinsteadhaddraggedtheirprisoneralittlewaythroughthejungleandthenstruckthetrailfurtheronbeyondthesceneofthefightinginwhichtheirfellowswereengaged.
