Neverhadtheape-manfoughtsoterribleabattlesincethatlong-gonedaywhenBolgani,thegreatkinggorillahadsohorriblymanhandledhimerethenew-foundknifehad,byaccident,prickedthesavageheart.
Tarzan’sknifeonthepresentoccasionbutbarelyoffsetthegleamingfangsofTerkoz,andwhatlittleadvantagetheapehadoverthemaninbrutestrengthwasalmostbalancedbythelatter’swonderfulquicknessandagility.
Inthesumtotaloftheirpoints,however,theanthropoidhadashadethebetterofthebattle,andhadtherebeennootherpersonalattributetoinfluencethefinaloutcome,TarzanoftheApes,theyoungLordGreystoke,wouldhavediedashehadlived—anunknownsavagebeastinequatorialAfrica.
Buttherewasthatwhichhadraisedhimfarabovehisfellowsofthejungle—thatlittlesparkwhichspellsthewholevastdifferencebetweenmanandbrute—Reason.ThisitwaswhichsavedhimfromdeathbeneaththeironmusclesandtearingfangsofTerkoz.
Scarcelyhadtheyfoughtadozensecondseretheywererollingupontheground,striking,tearingandrending—twogreatsavagebeastsbattlingtothedeath.
