Thatnighthesleptintheforestnotfarfromthevillage,andearlythenextmorningsetoutslowlyonhishomewardmarch,huntingashetraveled.Onlyafewberriesandanoccasionalgrubwormrewardedhissearch,andhewashalffamishedwhen,lookingupfromaloghehadbeenrootingbeneath,hesawSabor,thelioness,standinginthecenterofthetrailnottwentypacesfromhim.
Thegreatyelloweyeswerefixeduponhimwithawickedandbalefulgleam,andtheredtonguelickedthelonginglipsasSaborcrouched,wormingherstealthywaywithbellyflattenedagainsttheearth.
Tarzandidnotattempttoescape.Hewelcomedtheopportunityforwhich,infact,hehadbeensearchingfordayspast,nowthathewasarmedwithsomethingmorethanaropeofgrass.
Quicklyheunslunghisbowandfittedawell-daubedarrow,andasSaborsprang,thetinymissileleapedtomeetherinmid-air.AtthesameinstantTarzanoftheApesjumpedtooneside,andasthegreatcatstruckthegroundbeyondhimanotherdeath-tippedarrowsunkdeepintoSabor’sloin.
Withamightyroarthebeastturnedandchargedoncemore,onlytobemetwithathirdarrowfullinoneeye;butthistimeshewastooclosetotheape-manforthelattertosidesteptheonrushingbody.
TarzanoftheApeswentdownbeneaththegreatbodyofhisenemy,butwithgleamingknifedrawnandstrikinghome.
